Rejected Movement options

let me preface this by saying there might already be some great systems already in place surrounding movement that I don't know about
I think it would be nice to have some way to move around a lot quicker so maybe something like a double jump ability you unlock or some spell that launches you forwards.
Possibly an item that launches you a few blocks in the air
or something that if you jump from a high ledge the floor acts like slime blocks when you hit the floor and you bounce back up taking no fall dmg with probably a cooldown or something.

This was briefly discussed in general chat around a week ago. It is more than likely that an item that increases movement won't be available during the alpha, although it's still possible. Fast travel will be in the game afaik at some point. Besides that mounts will most likely be the most common "movement option" but this thread clearly isn't about them.

I've made a thread about a class with loads of movement options ( https://www.dyescape.com/threads/dyescape-class-mobility-discussion.512/ ) and would most likely be the best place for discussion about class mobilty.

Items that give movement abilities on the other hand is another topic I have briefly discussed, mainly in with the ability to have more than one item in your hotbar. I am personally neutral when it comes to movement items as there are major gameplay implications with them. I will briefly mention a few.

  1. Level design. The world, dungeon and all other content would need to be gone over and checked that movement items don't break them. (Skipping bosses, rooms, clipping into areas you shouldn't be in, etc.)
  2. Gameplay design. Safe spotting is a big way people scum their way through content. If mobs cannot hit you, you can take all the time you want killing them.
  3. Immersion. Linked to point 1. If people are zooming around at a fast pace it can break the immersion.
  4. (Potential) PvP issues. If you have an item that lets you go into spots others cant you can easily beat people in PvP.
Note. These issues affect classes with mobility also. (Check the thread i linked)

Yes we could block the use of movement abilities in certain areas and add barriers to prevent people from clipping, it's still extra effort. And at a certain point the restrictions are so common that these items do not have a point in existing. Besides that, fast travel is there for large distances, mounts are useful for medium distances and walking a short distance is not the end of the world.

Movement is great! We like movement and high-paced combat and adventures. If you go over the class skills from the wiki you can see that most classes already have movement skills. Warrior has a leap and a forward rush. Mage has two teleportation skills. Knight has a generic speed buff, evasive slash, and airborne slash. So... plenty of movement!

This was briefly discussed in general chat around a week ago. It is more than likely that an item that increases movement won't be available during the alpha, although it's still possible.
This is actually not completely true, there are already items that affect base movement speed. It is high likely that no other movement option will be given by items for a very long period of time to keep things balanced.

@KabbyDankGod does bring up a good point in regards to movement items bringing imbalance towards the game and that is one of the reasons why such items will also not exist or only very rarely. We deliberately design classes in such a way that they have pros and cons. Adding a lot of movement to the Priest class would simply make it broken.

For now, I will move this thread to rejected as it's already implemented and no additional movement in this regard (items) will not be added to the game.
