This is a simple quality of life feature for players.
The main function is to allow players to link their items in chat, it would appear something like this [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker] and when players hover over the name of the item in chat, it shows the stats like it would if you hover over the item in your inventory.
In most mmorpg's you link the item by clicking the item in your inventory while having a key held, like alt or shift or something else...I don't think this method would work with minecraft, so an alternative could be pressing a key or combination of keys while holding the item in hand, would open your chat with the item linked already in your textbar and then you could add text after it or before.
While seemingly simple this feature makes the gameplay smoother, cause players don't have to constantly wiki for items other players talk aboutto know the stats or what it does(if it is a consumable), it could also be expanded to allow users to link an ability, a quest.
Example of what this looks like in Path of Exile
Never gonna give you up, Never gonna let you down, Never gonna run around and desert you.
